August Meeting Recap & More

Posted by admin on August 7, 2012

Big thanks to Chris Basso of Newburgh Brewing for speaking at our August meeting. Chris was very informative about his experiences launching his new brewery and his own personal brewing preferences. The Brewsers even got invited to visit the brewery in Newburgh! Considering Newburgh Brewing is only 1 hour outside of NYC, I imagine we will be making a trip up there sometime in the near future. You can see pictures of our meeting here.

In other news, Heartland Brewery’s 2nd Annual Home Brewer Competition is coming to NYC this Tuesday, August 14th at the world famous Empire State Building. More information can be found here. Several of the Brooklyn Brewsers will be attending and competing at the event. If you have not signed up yet you should send them an email as soon as possible to do so.

Congratulations again to Brewsers member Kyler Serfass, winner of the 2012 Lagunitas Brewing Company Special Brewing Competition for New York City. Kyler’s beer, Lagunitas Fusion 10, is now available in the New York market!

Kyler, along with two of the competition’s judges, Carolyn Pinkus and Kirk Struble, were flown to Sonoma to brew Kyler’s beer. Since Lagunitas had recently brewed a black IPA similar to that for which Kyler won the NYC competition, the group decided to go a different direction. The result was an impressive wheat ale, perfect for summer weather.  It also has the distinction of being the lightest beer in Lagunitas history, starting at 12.2° Plato (gravity of about 1.050). The grain bill for Lagunitas Fusion 10 is roughly equal parts wheat and 2-row base malt with a small portion of flaked oats. The beer was hopped with Citra and experimental hops and lightly spiced with grains of paradise. It was fermented with Lagunitas’ house IPA strain (similar to White Labs 002 or Wyeast 1968).

Kyler’s blog includes more details on the beer and a slideshow from his brewday.

Congratulations to Brewsers member Kyler Serfass for winning the 2012 Lagunitas Brewing Company Special Brewing Competition for New York City!  Kyler’s Black IPA, nominated to represent the Brooklyn Brewsers at our May meeting, was selected by Lagunitas as the top entry from NYC homebrew clubs.

Kyler will brew his Black IPA with Lagunitas Head Brewer Jeremy Marshall in late June.  The beer will be available for sale in New York market later in the year.

Brewsers Featured In Brooklyn Homebrew Tour

Brooklyn Homebrew Tour - Brooklyn Brewsers Homebrew Club

Our very own Joe posted this interesting entry to his blog about the Brooklyn Homebrew Tour. Several members of the Brewsers opened up their homes to share their experiences, and more importantly their brews, with the public. The Brooklyn Homebrew Tour is something of a pub crawl but rather than crawling pubs, they "crawl" the apartments  of homebrewers throughout Brooklyn.

The original blog entry can be found here: http://craftbeercoach.blogspot.com/2012/05/2nd-stop-on-brooklyn-homebrew-tour.html

Mead.png

This upcoming meeting in March we will be having Chris Johnson, local meadmaker extraordinaire speak to the brewsers. He will give us an introduction to meadmaking and may even perform a live demonstration and "brew" a batch at the meeting.  He says for a very simple batch it can take as little as 30mins. We are definitely excited about having Chris for our speaker and hope everyone can make it. Cheers!

Brewsers-Bash-Logo.png

I am pleased to announce that this Sunday, January 29th at 2:00pm we will be having our 1st Annual Brewsers Bash!

Since December was a crazy and hectic month for most of us with the holiday's and New Year's, the Brooklyn Brewsers will be welcoming in 2012 a little late with an extra boozy holiday party at our regular meeting spot Brouweij Lane. The awesome guys at Brouwerij are letting us bring all the homebrews our arms can carry and even put up some brews on tap! We will be doing a pot luck lunch/dinner to please feel free to bring some food if your are able to.

Despite being a relatively new homebrew club, it is pretty incredible how large and successful the Brooklyn Brewsers have become andI think we all have reason to celebrate! I hope everyone can make it, but if not we will have one or two, three, four, or possibly five beers in your honor.
Here are the details:

What: Brewsers Bash
When: January 29th, 2012 @ 2:00pm
Where: Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Avenue. Brooklyn, NY 11222)

Speaker from Troegs to Kick Off the New Year

Posted by admin on December 30, 2011

Troegs-Brewing-Co_logo.png

This upcoming meeting on January 9th we have AJ from Troegs Brewing Company as our monthly speaker. I know I am very excited to hear about his experiences brewing and working for Troegs. For those who don't know, Troegs Brewing Company is a craft brewery based in Hershey, PA founded by two brothers John and Chris Trogner. They are known for producing some awesome seasonal beers such as The Mad Elf, which they had up at Brouwerij Lane recently (they still may). Thanks to Pete who lined this up while vacationing in California.

I hope everyone has a great New Year's and celebrates with lots of delicious beers. I have a feeling 2012 will be a very good year for the Brooklyn Brewsers (unless the Mayan apocalypse happens, then we're screwed). Cheers!

Next Meeting: 1/9/2012

Posted by admin on December 13, 2011

Our next meeting for January will NOT be on the 2nd due to most of us being away and/or too hungover from New Years Eve celebrations. Instead we will be meeting at our standard time (7pm) the following Monday, January 9th 2012 (yes, our very first 2012 meeting!).

I am currently reaching out to a speaker but am still waiting to hear back. If anyone has any suggestions for other speakers please feel free to post it on the Yahoo group for now.

New Website

Posted by admin on December 6, 2011

In addition to our Facebook and Yahoo group pages, we finally have our own Brooklyn Brewsers website! BrooklynBrewsers.com will serve as a information and communication hub for group members, prospective members and the general public.

This site is still in its infancy and has lots of work that needs to be done to provide more functionality and an all-around better experience. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email me at eliot@brooklynbrewsers.com or fill out the form on the contact page.
